AT&T Corp looks as if it is turning back on its Unix heritage in favour of Windows NT: according to PC Week, Microsoft Corp and AT&T Global Information Solutions are holding talks on adding technologies to Windows NT to bring the Microsoft server software up to the functionality of enterprise operating systems from IBM Corp, Digital Equipment Corp and Unix System V vendors. The two companies plan next month to announce a number of joint development projects and timetables for adding AT&T technologies to NT and SQL Server ’95, sources familiar with the plans told the paper, suggesting AT&T Global will supplant DEC as Microsoft’s strategic partner for developing enterprise-scale code. DEC has helped with Distributed Computing Environment, Common Object Model and middleware linking NT with Unix, and says it is doing even more now.
