Hewlett-Packard Co, one of the founding members of the Infrared Data Association, and creator of the technology that is the basis of the standard, has launched two six page-per-minute printers capable of use through wireless infra-red commands, and also have parallel ports. Both models have 600 by 600 dots per inch resolution and infra-red control of printing and font management software, and Hewlett’s Resolution Enhancement technology to improve print quality. The printers produce 120 shades of grey in Windows at 106-line screens.

The printers also have Hewlett-Packard’s Memory Enhancement enabling complex pages and scanned images to be printed in true 600 by 600 dpi from base memory and can be expanded to 50Mb and 35Mb respectively. Each also has a LocalTalk port, the Infrared Data Association-compliant port and automatic interface switching among all ports. They are designed for up to 12,000 pages per month. The LaserJet 5P also includes 45 built-in scalable fonts and offers an additional 65 TrueType scalable fonts to choose from on disk for Windows. The HP LaserJet 5MP printer includes PostScript Level 2 software and has 3Mb standard memory, and includes 35 built-in scalable Type 1 fonts, with an additional 75 fonts on disk for Windows when using PostScript. The HP LaserJet 5P printer also ships with MS-DOS printing utilities and printer drivers for Wordperfect and Lotus Development Corp’s 1-2-3. The HP LaserJet 5MP printer includes PostScript printer software for Macintosh and Windows. The Macintosh printing software supports Quickdraw and Quickdraw GX environments. The Windows printing software includes PostScript Level 2 printer driver, HP FontSmart and the HP LaserJet printer Status Window. All of the software that ships with the HP LaserJet 5P printer also is available for the HP LaserJet 5MP printer. The 5P is $1,100, the 5MP is $1,300, and both are available now. They replace the company’s HP LaserJet 4P and 4MP printers.
