Motorola Inc says its Asia Pacific Cellular Infrastructure unit has signed a contract worth more than $100m to install a fixed wireless telephone network in the southern and western Mindanao regions of the Philippines. The contract is part of a so-called build-and-transfer arrangement between the Pilipino Telephone Corp or Piltel, and Japan’s Marubeni Corp, which calls for Marubeni to build the network and for Piltel to operate it. The Motorola network will fulfill part of Piltel’s commitment to provide 400,000 additional telephone lines in southern regions of the Philippines, Motorola said. It said the network will provide service for residential and business subscribers in cities such as Davao, General Santos, Pagadian, Zamboanga and Dipolog. Installation will start toward the end of this year with service scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 1997.
