Reports circulating recently in the US say Hitachi Data Systems Corp, which is already selling Sequent Computer Systems Inc kit to fill an symmetric multiprocessing Unix server requirement in the US, and is preparing a PowerPC strategy (CI No 2,746), may begin to market a line of one- to eight-way Pentium servers developed in Japan, called PC 3100 running Santa Cruz Operation Inc OpenServer and MPX software for database serving. Hitachi Data officials declined to comment, while Sequent said it had received assurances that the Pentium units, possible competition to its Symmetrys, aren’t destined for the US market. And there is more than just new system lines in Hitachi Data’s game-plan. To move itself into other markets, the company – in which the Electronic Data Systems Corp subsdiary of General Motors Corp has a 20% stake – will be unveiling an Enterprise Storage Solutions programme in November.
