NEC Corp has also announced both a card and a board-type ISDN terminal adaptor for use in connecting remote personal computers into ISDN local networks. The card, which fits into the PCMCIA R2.0 (equivalent to Japanese standard JEIDA V4.1) slot of a personal computer, is known as Aterm IC series, while the board which fits into the expansion slot of the NEC 9800 personal computer and works through the personal computer bus, is known as the Aterm IB series. Both incorporate ISDN drivers such as NDIS (developed by Microsoft Corp and 3Com Corp) and permit the connection from a personal computer application directly into a remote local network which uses TCP/IP or NetWare. The PCMCIA card supports the use of a public ISDN dial-up line – such lines are becoming more widespread in Japan.
