Irvine, California-based Western Digital Corp plans to invest $225m in Singapore by 2000, chairman, president and chief executive Charles Haggerty said at the opening of a new disk plant in Tuas, western Singapore. The plant will make high-end disk drives. Western Digital’s current investment in Singapore stands at $176m, comprising $164m in its first plant at Chai Chee in east Singapore and $12m in the new Tuas plant. Western Digital is evaluating Singapore as a potential location for a disk platter plant but a decision hasn’t been taken yet, Haggerty said. It also plans to raise its investment in Malaysia to $150m by 2000 from the $103m it has sunk into the company currently, and last week it also officially opened its new Kuala Lumpur disk plant (CI No 3,023).
