Amdahl Corp is working out the details of a tie-up with Cray Research Inc that will see it rebadge the Eagan, Minnesota-based company’s CS6400 SuperServers, and an announcement is expected at the end of February. The CS6400s come with from four to 64 60MHz SuperSparcs, 256Mb to 16Gb of memory and up to 2Tb disk, and run under Solaris. Amdahl already markets Sun Microsystems Inc Sparcservers at its low end, and has a wide-ranging agreement with Sun on Solaris development. In the UK Amdahl already successfully bid a Cray SuperServer system using Oracle Corp’s transaction processing software, outgunning a Pyramid Technology Corp Meshine at Churchill Insurance Ltd. The Cray deal seems to place question marks over Amdahl’s tie-up with nCube Corp, and over its own UTS mainframe Unix offerings.
