AT&T Corp has cut only a small fraction of the nearly 30,000 jobs it needs to trim by year-end as part of its three- way break-up, The Wall Street Journal reported. Only about 1,000 people have been laid off since January, and another 6,000 managers left the payroll in January with voluntary buyouts, but these cuts have been offset by the hiring of 4,400 since January. It said at the start of the year that it would eliminate 40,000 jobs over three years, with 70% by year-end.
