Fremont, California-based StarSight Telecast Inc was demonstrating its digital interactive navigation system at the Western Cable Television Conference & Expo. The new StarSight Navigator is an interactive television guide developed in conjunction with Orbit Interaction Inc, a design consultancy in Palo Alto. The company says the system can accommodate digital television set-top boxes and broadband networks as well as more constrained analogue systems. Features include an on-screen programme grid guide, one-button VCR recording, theme categories, instant information, direct tuning, and customised channel line-up. In addition, it supports advertising and promotion of programming, products and services, and on-line data services such as news, weather, sports and stocks. For example, viewers watching a football match could access a menu of options that includes scores from other games, information about specific players, or order products such as team jerseys or scarves. StarSight Telecast is working with Wink Communications Inc, I3 Design and Adlink to develop the infrastructure for the system.
