Fremont, California-based Cirrus Logic Inc has announced the CL-GD5425, a television-output true colour VGA graphics controller. It integrates television processing for output that is compatible with the NTSC, PAL and SECAM television standards as well as MS-DOS and Windows, so personal computer applications can be brought to the emerging market for set-top devices. The television processing support features a flicker-filter which reduces the flicker that computer graphics generate when displayed on a television. An output scaler compensates for overscan on consumer televisions, restoring the full viewable area that MS-DOS and Windows require. In addition to the consumer market, the CL-GD5425 has RS-170A compatibility, line-locked subcarrier and genlock capabilities for professional television applications. The CL-GD5425 has a direct interface to television encoders reducing the system cost for VGA-TV output. The CL-GD5425 is sampling now at $25 and will be in production in March for $20 in 1, 000-up quantities.
