Kanata, Ottawa-based Newbridge Networks Inc claims to have the first Token Ring edge device to provide integral Asynchronous Transfer Mode local network emulation. Launched as part of its Vivid range and designed for use with the Vivid Workgroup Switch, the new Blue Ridge edge device is claimed to be fully compliant with the ATM Forum’s LAN Emulation specification. It provides packet forwarding into the Asynchronous Transfer fabric for up to 10 Token Ring ports at full wire speed, and runs at 4Mbps or 16Mbps per port. According to Newbridge, it can be configured with one or two OC-3 155Mbps links, and it is claimed that each of its ports provides source route bridging between the attached Token Ring local net and the Asynchronous Mode-emulated Token Ring. The offering is due to ship in mid-December for $18,500.
