Novell Inc has announced the open beta availability of NetWare version 4.11 – the Green River release. Among the enhancements is the inclusion of the NetWare Web Server 2.5, designed to enable NetWare to be used as the system for intranet and Internet Web sites. It incorporates the NetBasic scripting engine, as well as support for Java applets, JavaScript, the Remote Common Gateway Interface, the Local Common Gateway Interface, access controls and logging, as well as PERL script interpreters. Alongside NetBasic, NetBasic for the Internet has also been added, enabling Web browser users to access and execute Basic scripts across the Internet. Novell has also brought access to its NetWare Directory Services into the Internet fold, by enabling Directory information to be published on Web pages: in this way, says the company, end users can browse the directory (through user names, electronic mail addresses, Universal Resource Locators, and generalized listings) for access to information about network users and resources. NetWare Directory Services access controls have also been used to enable administrators to control access to Web pages by users and groups. Also new with the release is fully support for TCP/IP with Dynamic Host C onfiguration protocol, as well as C2 level security. Finally, the company has added new NetWare Licensing Services to enable organizations to track and monitor the use of NLS-enabled licensed applications. The software is available for a nominal shipping and handling fee; users can register to receive it from Novell’s Web site at http://netware.novell.com/river/ . Novell is now shipping LAN WorkPlace Pro for Windows95 and NT, the latest version of its TCP/IP applications suite. LAN WorkPlace Pro is designed to extend the TCP/IP application functionality available in the Windows95 and NT operating systems with features such as improved Internet access, single and shared installation for desktop or server administration, terminal emulation capability, file and print services, and X-server capability. The package uses the TCP/IP stack and dialer included in Windows95 and NT, and is targeted at NetWare users of those environments. The suggested single-user retail price is $250 while multi-user licenses start at $40 per user.
