We have highlighted scores of storage capacity breakthroughs over the years, only to find that however dramatic they seemed, no-one ever used them – how many people even use 2.88Mb 3.5 floppy drive that seemed like such a simple upgrade when IBM Corp finally endorsed it three or four years ago? So although Fuji Photo Film Co has come up with a 3.5 floppy disk medium that stores a formidable 100Mb to 200Mb, we have to have our doubts about whether it will catch on. Fuji Photo reckons it will be able to manufacture the disk for about one third the cost of magneto-optic platters, and says hopefully We expect our new disk to replace the magneto-optical disk, adding that the drives will not cost much more than current models. The access time has also been increased to 30 times the speed of current floppy disks, Fuji Photo added.
