A system to enable doctors to see instant three-dimensional X-ray images of patients without waiting for film to be developed, which has taken seven years to develop and cost UKP20m, is at risk from the plans to merge Hammersmith Hospital – where the work is being done – with Charing Cross Hospital, the Evening Standard reckons: in the new department, which was to have been opened next month, the place is wired with fibre optics so that doctors and surgeons in operating theatres, surgeries, clinics and on the ward can call up the images on a screen and compare the progress of a condition over several years.
