Managing director of Madrid-based Hewlett-Packard Espanola SA, Juan Soto, recently announced impressive results for the subsidiary’s 1995 fiscal year to October 31, with turnover climbing 40% to $1,240.8m from $883.7m. The remarkable figures have been achieved thanks to heady export sales and a solid domestic performance. Net profits exceeded $82m. Hewlett’s San Cugat, Barcelona factory, which has global responsibility for the HP DesignJet plotters and responsibility for European production and distribution of the HP DeskJet printers, reported export sales of $766.3m, up 59% on the same period last year. This confirmed Hewlett-Packard as the top manufacturer and exporter in the Spanish computer equipment sector. The volume of domestic sales was up 22% on the previous year at $474.5m. The company is second only to IBM Corp in personal computer sales and was forecast to have sold an estimated 65,000 units by the year-end. It has cornered more than half the printer market in Spain, with recent annual sales reported of 68,350 laser printers and 230,000 inkjets. As for Unix, the company said it has increased presence in the financial sector by 45%, and in the telecommunications sector by 30%.
