Apart from Toshiba Corp with its notebook computers, the record of Japanese companies trying to make a success of computers in the US market is a dismal one, but undaunted, Canon Inc plans to build iAPX-86-based machines optimised to run its NeXTstep object-oriented graphical environment at its Canon Computer Systems Inc in Costa Mesa, California, and its ambitous target is to become a $1,000m-a-year company by 1997. It will also make and market conventional personal computers, and manufacture the PowerPC line being developed by Powerhouse Systems Inc – with manufacturing in Memphis, Tennessee. High-end machines will be handled by an Advanced Technologies Operation in Hillsboro, Oregon.
