EMC Corp, Hopkinton, Massachusetts today extends its disk array skills beyond the mainframe and AS/400 markets and into the burgeoning client-server world. According to the New York Times, the new line, called Centriplex, is designed to give client-server customers many of the same data-storage and network-security capabilities now found only on mainframe storage systems. Centriplex will be priced between $215,000 and $950,000. The company is also expected to show off its offerings for the nascent video server market – it is workig with Alcatel NV on a cinema of the future delivery system that will end the need for film prints – cinemas would intercept coded transmissions of the films in digital form, which would be stored on local EMC servers and shown on large high-definition video screens, without a projector, ending the problems of scratched prints and breaking films.
