Conner Peripherals Inc, San Jose and Adaptec Inc, Milpitas have combined technologies to double data transfer rates over the AT bus: Conner claims its Filepro Advantage 540 disk, used with the Adaptec’s AIC-25VL01 interface chip for the VESA local bus architecture, achieves burst data throughput of 12Mb per second; the 1 high two-platter drive features an adaptive, segmented buffer with write cacheing and look-ahead reads, read-write direct memory access and command automation; Adaptec’s AIC-25VL01 supports PIO Mode 3 (up to 12Mb per second) and PIO Modes 4 and 5 (up to 20Mb per second) and is compatible with the majority of VL-bus-based 80386 and 80486 systems; the AIC-25VL01 is available as a chip as a VESA multifunction add-in board for AT bus system users.
