Another name to be added to the slowly growing list of Mac OS licensees appears to be DayStar Digital Inc, of Flowery Branch, Georgia. MacWeek hears that the the maker of accelerator boards will next month launch a line of publishing and pre-press workstations built around up to four PowerPC 604 processors and using the Peripheral Component Interconnect bus, for delivery by August. The line is expected to include diskless models and to be priced at between $5,000 to $10,000 – but the base price apparently does not even include any memory. DayStar is said to be working on an open standard for multiple-processor support on the Mac that can be used by any application, with the work being done with Apple’s active support and approval. The paper hears that DayStar has been working with developers such as Adobe Systems Inc and HSC Software Inc to get their support for the architecture, and that the current release of Adobe Photoshop will be able to support multiple processors in the DayStar configuration. DayStar and Apple declined to comment on the reports.
