Further to our report on coming events in the IBM Corp world (CI No 2,488), further gossip on the grapevine has it that the biggest item in the October 4 announcement – which some say will actually happen at Unix Expo in New York on October 5 – will be the PowerPC-based upgrade machine for System/36 users, but that despite the launch location, it likely won’t run Unix; the disks are definitely coming, but we probably shouldn’t expect a preview of the OS/400 4.0 release; as for 3.1, early versions are shipping, and IBM is said to be hoping to get it out in complete form before the end of the year.
