Sony Corp is introducing a mobile navigation system to the US, enabling drivers to find out travel information by looking at an LCD monitor that is hooked up to a series of satellites: it uses software from News Corp Ltd unit Etak Corp; the 5 colour screen lays out detailed digital moving maps that are recorded on CD-ROM, called an EtakGuide; with the help of satellites, the system pinpoints the car’s location on colour maps in relation to the destination, and updates every second and a zoom function and high-speed panning help the process; the EtakGuide also details hotels, restaurants and leisure activities; Sony expects to sell the system in the second half of 1994 for about $2,500 but it has not yet been approved by US states that restrict the use of screens in cars.
