Belgacom, the Brussels-based state-owned Belgian telephone company, is actively looking for a partner for its international telephone business, with British Telecommunications Plc and AT&T Co among its list of possibles. Our main objective for 1994 is to protect Belgacom’s position in international telephone traffic. One of the measures I propose is an alliance with a foreign operator, chief executive Bessel Kok told Belgian daily Le Soir. Kok added that the ideal partner would be a large group and mentioned AT&T and British Telecom. The partnership could take the form of a co-operation agreement, a joint venture, or the foreign partner taking a minority stake in Belgacom, he said, but the board had not yet given the go-ahead for serious talks.
