The British information technology industry took a rich haul from this year’s New Year Honours List and in addition to the CBE for Iann Baron, and Iain Vallance’s knighthood mentioned on page one, two other British Telecommunications Plc staffers came in for official notice: customer services manager, Michael Owen and technical officer Albert Rolph each become Members of the Order of the British Empire. Both Rodney Aldridge, chairman and chief executive of the Capita Group Plc and Jean Irvine, who chairs the Women into Information Technology Foundation become Officers of the Order of the British Empire, as does John Taylor, director of Hewlett-Packard Co’s European laboratories. Other MBEs go to Norman Burrows, managing director of London-based Software Production Enterprises Ltd and Peter Copeland, chairman of Futuremedia Plc, the Bognor Regis-based publisher of personal computer-based training packages. On the hardware side, William Gold, senior manager at NEC Semiconductors (UK) Ltd also gets to add the letters MBE to his calling card. So do Ron Koffler, chairman and managing director of Galatrek International Ltd, the Colwyn Bay-based manufacturer of uninterruptible power supplies and Dennis Upton, lately project manager at Matra Marconi Space UK Ltd’s satellite communications division.
