BellSouth Corp said the transfer of cellular phone licences to AT&T Co from McCaw Cellular Communications Inc should be held up and asked that the US Federal Communications Commission to condition the merger on lifting provisions that restrict it from competing with AT&T and McCaw; it charged that AT&T has not lived up to a 1982 commitment to support removal of restrictions preventing the regional Bell firms from competing in long distance and manufacturing: BellSouth said it is not opposed to the proposed AT&T-McCaw merger; AT&T said it does not believe a waiver of the restrictions is required and is confident that there is no impediment to closing its merger with McCaw, anticipating completion by mid-1994.
