Hewlett-Packard Co has announced an HP-UX-based Program Resource Manager for defining workload groups and allocating specific processor time to each. The company argues that other Unix schedulers can only adjust processing priorities based on past usage to balance processor resources among users – it claims it cannot allocate more processor time to specific applications but must treat each equally. Hewlett-Packard says Program Resource Manager will enable system administrators to define central processor resources for particular applications, departments or groups. It also enables computer system costs to be allocated based on specific processing requirements or use. Program Resource Manager is integrated with Hewlett-Packard’s graphical user interface-based GlancePlus performance monitoring software which displays and monitor processor allocation by user or workgroup. Program Resource Manager cost from $2,300 to $11,500 and is out next month.
