At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Research In Motion (RIM) boss Jim Balsillie said that his company should not be written off from the race of smartphones.
Earlier Nokia’s Stephen Elop had commented that the smartphone ecosystem was now a three horse race between Windows, Android and Apple.
Balsillie said that Blackberry had witnessed 70% growth last year and added that it was also the number one phone in the UK.
Balsillie said, "I don’t know how you can say that we are not in the race."
"Are people writing us off? We have had huge growth in the last year. I wouldn’t write us off."
He also said that RIM is not business focussed as 80% of their subscribers are consumers. The bigger challenge is to move into larger devices such as tablets.
RIM announced its Playbook tablet device in September 2010.
At the show, the company behind the Blackberry line also said that it would be launching a 4G Playbook in the second half of the year.
