Electromagnetic interference, EMI, is the disruption of operation of an electronic device by an electromagnetic field.
Usually this occurs when an electronic device is in proximity to an EM field which disrupts the radio frequency spectrum.
Internal circuits within personal computers generate EM fields in the radio frequency range and these can interfere with the performance of a wireless receiver.
Typically this is only created by moderate or high powered wireless transmitters. For example it is likely that a user has experience EMI if living near a radio or television transmitter.
