GNU is an operating system for computers based on free software.

The system's basic components include the GNU Compiler Collection, the GNU C library, GNU Core Utilities, the GNU Debugger, GNU Binary Utilities, the GNU Bash shell and the GNOME desktop environment.

The term Linux is often used to refer to the GNU system. Linux is the kernel that allocates the machine’s resources to programmes. This kernel is usually used in combination with the GNU operating system. However, the system overall is GNU with Linux added.
