In the context of computing, payload is the actual intended message sent in transmitted data. The term payload is borrowed from the transportation industry, referring to the part of the load which actually pays out.
For example, a truck may have a load of 10 tonnes of fruit – the fruit is what pays and generates revenue, but the fully loaded truck also includes the driver, fuel, and the vehicle itself.
