Picasa was Google’s image organiser and viewer software.
The product was originally developed by Lifescape and launched in October 2002. Google acquired the company in July 2004.
The name Picasa comes from the merger of Pablo Picasso name with the Spanish phrase ‘mi casa’ (‘my home).
Picasa was released by Google as freeware, and run on Windows and Mac operating systems.
Picasa was discontinued in March 2016, with support for web albums being ended in May 2016.
Google said that the company would focus from then on on its Google Photos service.
Google said at the time: "Since the launch of Google Photos, we’ve had a lot of questions around what this means for the future of Picasa. After much thought and consideration, we’ve decided to retire Picasa over the coming months in order to focus entirely on a single photo service in Google Photos.
“We believe we can create a much better experience by focusing on one service that provides more functionality and works across mobile and desktop, rather than divide our efforts across two different products."
