Tieto, an IT service company, and wireless platforms and semiconductors company ST-Ericsson have launched a web multimedia offering for ST-Ericsson smartphone platform U8500 on Android.

The offering is designed to simplify mobile web video and allow broader end-user support without reducing media quality and performance.

The mobile web multimedia has high definition WebM video support on Android on the U8500 reference platform.It is reaching high definition quality by using ST-Ericsson’s WebM video decoder, optimised for advanced dual-core CortexA9 CPU, and the video rendering capability of U8500, said Tieto.

ST-Ericsson senior vice-president of strategic planning Edgar Auslander said the aim is to give their software partners powerful and flexible hardware platforms that would help them build innovative applications.

Auslander said, "By combining Tieto’s considerable Android expertise with the power of our leading-edge smartphone platform, we have turned watching web-based video into a compelling and immersive experience."

Tieto head of connected devices Mika Yletyinen said, "Tieto has been an integration and development partner of ST-Ericsson for several years and our latest showcase of web multimedia extends this successful partnership. The multimedia offering is slated to be launched at the Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona.
