Nicknamed muxing, multiplexing is about using a shared channel for transferring information by combining multiple analog or digital signals.
One of the main reasons for the existence of multiplexing is the necessity for network interoperability. By doing multiplexing, and shared a common platform, devices from different networks are able to communicate between each others.
By sharing this network, multiplexing also helps to lower down operational costs as there is no need to run several networks.
