Cyberbullying is when an individual or group deliberately harasses or harms another individual or group via IT networks.
Cyberbullying could include messages or communications that aim to intimidate, humiliate, discredit, control or manipulate another person. These messages are always deliberate and often repeated in order to harm the victim. A cyberbully does not necessarily have to know the person they are targeting and may direct hostile messages anonymously.
In recent times, with the proliferation of social media networks and technology in general, cyberbullying has become more and more common.
Social media sites, in particular, have seen a huge rise in cyber bullying. Utilising the comments feature cyberbullies can direct messages of intimidation and humiliation, while also encouraging other online users to join in on the bullying. Cyberbullies can also use the personal data found on social media sites and use it to impersonate their target in order to defame, ridicule or discredit them.
