Built by the Wi-Fi Alliance, Wi-Fi is a radio wave based technology that provides network connectivity between devices.
Devices connect to a wireless local area network (WLAN). WLAN is also the official definition of Wi-Fi according to the Wi-Fi Alliance.
Wi-Fi is an abbreviation of two words, however, no official full name has been released. Most people in the tech industry accept Wireless Fidelity as the full name for Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi uses radio waves to send and receive data between a network. Data is usually transmitted at a frequency of level of 2.4 GHz or 5GHz.
The technology is based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) 802.11 standards.
In terms of security, the WLAN technology can be protected by a password or the network can be open.
The Wi-Fi Alliance suggests that for maximum security, network should include only devices with the latest in security technology, including Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2).
