Middlesbrough, Belfast and Brighton have been ranked the cities with the fastest broadband speeds in a survey of 42 UK cities, while Hull, Aberdeen and Milton Keynes were ranked lowest.
According to figures from uSwitch, Middlesbrough topped the list with an average download speed of 34.46 Mbps.
Belfast followed with 34.34 Mbps, while Brighton was in third place with 33.80.
Meanwhile, at the bottom of the list was Hull, with an average download speed of 12.42 Mbps.
Aberdeen came second last with 15.67 Mbps while Milton Keynes came third last with 17.10.
Hull is served by independent provider KCOM, which is currently rolling out fibre to the home connections.
Ewan Taylor-Gibson, broadband expert at uSwitch.com, said that "actual speed tests taken by broadband users would suggest this hasn’t reached enough homes yet to make an impact on the average."
The report also revealed that London and Edinburgh, capitals of England and Scotland respectively, were not among the best-served cities, with average speeds of 22.44Mbps and 21.07Mbps respectively.
Only 22 of the cities on the list actually had superfast broadband.
Taylor-Gibson notes that the difference between the availability of superfast broadband (90 percent of homes according to Government figures) and the speeds actually experienced should be cause for concern.
"We should be asking what more can be done to encourage the adoption of superfast broadband now it’s so widely available," he said.
The figures were based on data for six-month period 9 Aug 2015 to 8 Feb 2016 based on 508,637 consumer speed tests carried out via the uSwitch Broadband Speed Test. They will hence differ from assessments based on the highest available speeds.
Only cities with more than 1,000 speed tests for the six-month period were included.
