The global storage software market witnessed a 6.1% rise during the third quarter of 2014 (3Q14), with its revenue reaching $3.8bn, the latest IDC report revealed.

IDC Storage Software research analyst Jingwen Li said: "Storage software sales were up across all functional markets, but software-defined storage platforms sales clearly led the pack."

"Up 39.4% year over year, the software-defined storage platforms market is benefiting from an increased desire to control costs by utilizing commodity hardware when building storage systems."

EMC topped the list of vendors by capturing 27.2% of global market share, followed by IBM (14.2%) and Symantec (12.8%).

During the quarter, data protection and recovery software sales rose by 6.1% to $1.4bn, while sales of storage infrastructure software increased by 6.5% $421.5m.

The sales of storage and device management software also grew by 7.3% year over year to $734m.

During Q2, the global storage software market augmented by 6.3%, with its revenues reaching nearly $3.8bn, with EMC, IBM, and Symantec topping the vendors’ list with market shares of 25.9%, 16.0%, and 13.3% respectively.
