PC monitor shipments touched over 35 million units in the third quarter of 2013 (3Q13), registering an increase of 4.5% as against the second quarter of 2013, according to a study by the International Data Corporation (IDC).

Although it beat expectations as 1.2 million units more were shipped, year-over-year growth declined by 8.6% in the quarter, as sales of PCs plummeted this year.

IDC Worldwide Trackers Research Analyst Jennifer Song said the third quarter saw Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) (APeJ), Western Europe, and Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) doing better than the overall market and increasing their regional market shares.

"China and India were the top growth drivers within APeJ, while Germany and Russia were the leading country markets in Europe," added Song.

IDC expects a fall in PC monitor shipments by 3.2% in the fourth quarter of 2013 to 33.9 million units. While the market research firm predicts a slight increase in total shipment forecast for 2013 from 134.7 million units to 136.3 million units, a fall of 8.5% from 2012.

Worldwide shipments are estimated fall further to 109.6 million units, below the previous expectation of 110.8 million units, on the back of increase in the adoption of mobile devices at lower price points continuing.

Dell held the top position with a global market share of 13.9% in the third quarter. It was followed by Samsung, HP, LG and AOC, which took the second, third, fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
