The University of Central Florida (UCF) has selected Oracle‘s multifaceted offering, which combines the technology company’s software and hardware to streamline its academic administration and to manage growth.
UCF implemented Oracle’s PeopleSoft Enterprise 9.1, PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools 8.50, and PeopleSoft Enterprise Campus Solutions running on Oracle Database 11g on Oracle’s Sun servers and storage.
This includes Oracle’s Sun Fire x86 clustered systems, Oracle’s Sun SPARC Enterprise T-Series and M-Series servers running Oracle Solaris, and Oracle’s StorageTek SL500 Modular Library System and Oracle’s StorageTek 2540 Array.
According to Oracle, with Sun SPARC servers, the UCF system is able to provide access to more than 50,000 students, faculty and staff and meet surges in demand during the busiest days of the academic year.
The StorageTek SL500 Modular Library System and StorageTek 2540 Array are two critical components of the data protection architecture.
Oracle claims that with its Sun hardware, UCF has reduced annual maintenance costs by more than $120,000, improved system performance by four times, and reduced operating costs and energy consumption with efficient, space-saving servers.
The university plans to leverage some of the new PeopleTools 8.50 features with its 9.1 applications in order to improve the usability and productivity of the PeopleSoft applications.
University of Central Florida CTO Bob Yanckello said Oracle’s hardware provides the performance and scalability needed to ensure that students, faculty and staff have access to the system even during the most severe traffic spikes.
