Asus has confirmed that it is building its own app store as its forthcoming Eee tablet computer series may not be compatible with Android 3.0 Honeycomb mobile OS.
The Taiwanese electronics maker said its tablets are not mobile phones and may not be compatible with the Google’s app store Android Marketplace, hence the need to build its own app store which will ensure that customers can still download the relevant apps.
The company said it will reveal more details about the app store in March at the CeBIT computer expo to be held in Hanover, Germany.
Meanwhile, at the Consumer Electronics Show at Las Vegas last week, Asus announced that its current shipment of 10-inch tablets – Eee Slider, Eee Transformer and Memo tablet would run on Honeycomb.
The Transformer will be available in the UK in the second quarter, while the Slider will appear in the third. Memo is likely to be released during the second half of 2011.
The above dates pertain to the WiFi version only. The 3G versions will be released one quarter later in the UK, Asus added.
