Twitter has today opened up its advertising to SMEs in the UK and Ireland, as well as announcing a partnership with O2 Business.

The social media giant, which raised $1.82bn when it floated on the stock market last week, has made promoted tweets, promoted accounts and promoted trend topics available for SMEs as it bids to grow even further its advertising revenue.

Its partnership with O2 is aimed at educating businesses on how best to use Twitter to engage with their audience, as well as how to get credit to spend on advertising on the social networking site through the self-service platform.

Twitter said: "People come to Twitter to share information, follow their interests, and connect with the brands and local businesses they care about.

"With the availability of Twitter self-serve advertising, these companies can now increase the reach of the content they are already sharing on the platform."

The self-service nature of the advertising tool appears set up for ease of use, with SMEs being taken through a series of quick steps to set up their accounts.

They include setting which currency a company is billed in, account reporting and applicable taxes.

A total of 85% of the company’s revenue is driven by advertising, 65% of which comes from mobile advertising.
