Rockstar, the consortium that acquired patented technologies of Norton for $4.5bn in 2011, has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Google, Samsung, HTC, Huawei at the US District Court in Texas.
Rockstar consortium is jointly backed by Apple, Microsoft, Blackberry, Ericsson and Sony.
According to the patent owner, Google infringed seven of its patents covering technology that assists in matching Internet search terms with appropriate advertising.
Other firms including Samsung, Huawei and HTC all build phones that are powered by Google’s Android OS, a fierce contender with mobile products from Apple and Microsoft.
The lawsuit said that Google placed an initial bid of $900,000,000 for the patents-in-suit and the rest of the Nortel portfolio.
"Google subsequently increased its bid multiple times, ultimately bidding as high as $4.4 billion," the filing added.
"That price was insufficient to win the auction, as a group led by the current shareholders of Rockstar purchased the portfolio for $4.5 billion.
"Despite losing in its attempt to acquire the patents-in-suit at auction, Google has infringed and continues to infringe the patents-in-suit."
After losing the bid to acquire Nortel patents, Google later acquired Motorola Mobility for $12.5bn.
