US mobile telecom network Verizon Wireless will unveil a version of the Apple iPhone for its service this week and begin the sale of the tablet device later this month.

The telecom network provider will begin offering Apple’s smartphone to its customers under its existing data plans, according to a source quoted by news agency Reuters.

Verizon Wireless, a joint venture between broadband telecom provider Verizon Communications and mobile telecom company Vodafone Group, is expected to announce the pricing for the iPhone on Tuesday.

The new agreement between Verizon Wireless and Apple spells the end of AT&T’s role as the only network provider of the iPhone in the US. AT&T has been the sole operator to sell the iPhone since the launch of the smartphone in 2007.

AT&T’s users in New York and San Francisco have often complained that the network’s performance was poor.

The new deal is expected to give iPhone customers better pricing, better network performance and more choice.
