A fresh look of ‘Yahoo Mail’ service has been launched on its 16th birthday, which incorporates a range of new features for both desktop and app versions.

The revamped e-mail service across all platforms allows users to tailor their inboxes with background colours and images from the Flickr photo service, while facilitating viewing conversation threads and attachments.

As part of the revamp, Yahoo also increased the storage capacity on the service to 1TB for all its users, while also updated apps for Apple’s iPhones and iPads, Google’s Android phones and Microsoft’s Windows 8 devices.

Yahoo Communication Products SVP Jeffrey Bonforte said that the firm is introducing ‘conversations’ for those who prefer to view e-mails grouped in threads.

"At the end of the day, being able to see an entire conversation can save you quite a bit of time. Context is king," Bonforte said.

"We redesigned Yahoo Mail to be more efficient, too.

"Things you do all of the time like search, starring, and deleting are now one-click actions that appear when you hover over an email.

"We also wanted to give you more breathing room in your inbox, so you can collapse the left-hand toolbar to be more productive."

The revamped desktop version is currently offered in English in the US, Canada, UK, Philippines, Malaysia, India, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa, with further launches to be revealed soon, while the mobile apps are offered on iOS, Android and Windows 8.

Yahoo’s move comes after Google’s announcement of a major revamp of its search engine algorithm on its 15th birthday.

Last month, Yahoo also launched its new logo, with no letters touching and ending with an exclamation point.

In the reign of Mayer, Yahoo also made several acquisitions including Lexity, Xobni, Qwiki, PlayerScale and Tumblr.
