A new hi-tech banknote featuring a number of new security features has been released by the US Federal Reserve.
The $100 note issued includes a 3D blue security ribbon and a bell and inkwell image which the reserve says are difficult to forge.
The bill features Benjamin Franklin – the scientist and founding father of America – with microprinted words difficult to read and raised printing too.
The new security measures combine with more traditional ones such as a portrait watermark and an embedded security thread which glows pink under UV light.
The 3D security ribbon is woven into the note rather than being printed on it and features images of 100s that become bells which tilt as you move the paper.
Doing this also reveals a green bell within a copper inkwell on the right side of the blue ribbon, and the bottom right 100 turns from copper to green.
The reserve spent 10 years researching the features in the new note, along with the Secret Service and the Department of the Treasury, with authorities saying the $100 bill is the most counterfeited banknote.
