Microsoft is partnering with Britain’s ARM Holdings compete with Apple in the lucrative tablet and smartphone arena.

Microsoft is planning to design a Windows operating system compatible with chips designed by ARM, a producer of chips for smartphones and tablet computers, reported Reuters.

In his opening address at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer tried to convince investors that Microsoft can hold its dominance in a world moving away from PC-centric computing.

Reuters quoted Ballmer as saying whatever device one uses, now or in the future, Windows will be there, without compromise.

Microsoft’s share price hobbled last year due to the lack of a coherent strategy on tablets, and its shares continue to trade around the same level they did eight years ago.
