The BBC has updated its iPlayer app for Android devices, allowing users to download BBC shows to their phone or tablet for free.
Users can download an episode and keep it for up to 30 days offline, with 7 days for viewing after they’ve pressed play..
The new app will work on recent versions of Android devices running Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean.
Devices which support download functionality include the Amazon Kindle 8.9, the Asus Nexus 7, the HTC One, the Google Nexus 4, the Samsung Galaxy S2, S3 and S4, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 the Google Nexus 10 and the Sony Xperia Z.
David Berlin, a senior product manager at the corporation, announced the update on his blog on 5 September, remarking that he’d also switched the default download mode to High Quality.
He said: "You can manually switch between Standard and High Quality downloads in the BBC iPlayer app Settings (found in the overflow menu – 3 dots or lines) to vary the download time and picture quality on phones or tablets.
"I’m really pleased that we are now able to deliver video playback quality parity with Apple iOS devices, support the full range of Android screen sizes, including tablet support and, as of today enable mobile TV download functionality to Android devices," added Berlin.
