Several UK retailers have stopped taking PlayStation 4 pre-orders over fears of a shortage supply, according to a report in the The Sun newspaper.

Sony told Tesco, Asda, Amazon and Toys R US that any orders for the console placed will not be guaranteed to ship on time to the US and UK.

A message on Amazon UK said: "Due to high demand, orders placed for this PlayStation 4 console from August 6 may be received after release date. We will ship orders as soon as we receive sufficient inventory."

Stuart Miles, editor of gadget website Pocket Lint, told The Sun: "The fact both consoles are released at the same time means the excitement is enormous.

"Both companies have had far more pre-orders than expected. This is good for both firms but they need to ensure they can meet demand. Problems longer term can seriously dent sales."

A release date has not been announced for the PS4 but it is expected to be released before Christmas.

The PS4, which is the latest version in seven years, includes a Blue-Ray drive for games and films, USB and ethernet ports and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections.
