A security blogger said he has foiled an attempt to frame him as a heroin dealer.
Brian Krebs, who is based in the US, claims the administrator of a Russian cybercrime forum formulated a scheme to order heroin paid for with bitcoin, arranging for it to be delivered to his home, and then tipped off the police, making it look as if the call had come from a neighbour’s house.
However, Krebs was already monitoring the website and witnessed the plan being hatched, meaning he was able to alert the FBI and police to the plot.
The respected security expert, who is due to speak at the Black Hat hackers conference in Las Vegas on August 1, said the drug package did indeed arrive at his home, at which point he gave it to police.
It is just the latest attempt to smear Krebs, who answered the door in March to a heavily armed police unit which had been tricked into responding to a 911 call made to look as if it came from his home.
He added that his website recently suffered a DDoS (distributed denial of service) when a large number of hijacked computers flooded his server, rendering it helpless and forcing him to take it offline temporarily.
He will speak about the rise in the number of DDoS attacks at the conference in Las Vegas.
