Cloud-computing and IT company EMC has announced it will acquire ScaleIO, for an undisclosed amount, to offer flash technology across its entire server and storage infrastructure.

EMC said it would combine the Israeli company’s scalable server software with PCIe Flash cards, including EMC XtremSF, into its own product portfolio and cloud computing environments.

ScaleIO will become part of EMC’s flash product division, while its Elastic Converged Storage (ECS) software will join the EMC XtremSW suite.

David Goulden, president and COO at EMC, said Flash now permeates every layer of IT, including virtualised and non-virtualised environments.

"ScaleIO is a natural extension to our best-of-breed portfolio. It strengthens our product capabilities in the area of server-side storage and brings a world class team that will undoubtedly enable us to innovate more quickly in the future," he added.

ScaleIO’s software creates a virtual pool of server-based storage by combining resources from solid-state drives, PCIe flash cards and traditional hard drives.
