Streaming and download services on mobile and tablet devices are expected to generate revenue of $9.5bn in 2017, according to a report from the Juniper Research.

The revenue from the service is expected to grow from $4.5bn this year, driven by the maturing of the market for streaming subscription services and pay-per-title content that is expected to create new business models for smartphone and tablet users.

Juniper Research report author Sian Rowlands said: "In order to be truly successful in the future, I think we will see players emerge who are prioritising their customers’ preferences; they will do this by utilising cloud technology, allowing consumers to resume playback on different devices, and enabling offline viewing."

According to the report, North America, Western Europe and the Far East & China are expected to be top three markets for Mobile TV and Video in terms of revenue, whose combined revenue share is anticipated to represent over 80% of the total revenue.

Latin America is expected to become an important market to watch for Mobile TV, following the World Cup and Olympics in 2014 and 2016 respectively, the report revealed.

The growth in the streaming services on mobile devices is expected to increase continued pressure on mobile operators’ network capacity, which is expected to be overcome with the use of Wi-Fi offload and the triple-play bundles.
